Chapter 12
âAh, the first full-blooded mortal in Otherworld for centuries,â Mattie said, twirling her across the room sheâd been giving in a high tower of the castle. âTheyâd spoil you rotten, if I wasnât here to prevent it.â
The elves had already brought her up several trays of too many delectable foods for her to ever eat all of in one day, as well as drawn her a bath, combed and braided her hair, and took her measurements to fit her for new dresses.
âJealous, are you?â she teased him. âWhereâs this cottage anyway? I do hope I find it to my satisfaction.â
âAh, you do a good spoiled brat,â he complimented her snooty accent. âIâll take you there later, after the doctorâs appointment.â
âWhy do the Fae have doctors anyway, if they never get sick and heal on their own?â she inquired, pausing to admire herself in front of the full-length mirror over the door. The elves had coiled the many braids theyâd given her into a fancy crown on the top of her head, as well as painted her lips and her eyelids and she couldnât seem to stop admiring their handiwork.
âAh, well, Dr. Barnaby isnât really for the Fae people,â Mattie admitted, a bit sheepish.
She turned to face him over her shoulder, puzzled. âWhat do you mean?â
âWell, heâs an animal doctor.â
âYou mean a veterinarian?â Lo demanded, becoming concerned.
âI mean he tends to horses, and the Fae pets, though heâs treated mortals before, though not for a very long time of course.â
Loâs face contorted, perturbed. âWell, then he must be like 900 years old!â
âMaybe,â Mattie shrugged. âFae donât keepâ¦â
âYes, yes, Fae donât keep track of age,â Lo finished for him. âWell, I donât know if I like this very much, being treated by an animal doctor, as if Iâm some â some pet!â
âLike it or not, itâs the kingâs orders, and Iâll see that you abide by them,â Mattie said. âThough Iâve not convinced him yet to lift my sentence, but High Fae help me, I will soon, and then youâll be mine really and truly, to attend to and keep in line.â
âWhat do you mean?â Lo said, her eyes narrowing.
âWhy, it means a man is responsible for his bound, of course,â Mattie explained, puzzled that she wouldnât already know. âYour crimes and misdoings would be seen as my own, and Iâd be the one to answer for them. But of course, youâd be answering to me.â
He grinned at that, pleased. Lo frowned. âSo you mean it would truly be like I was some pet to you? Some property that you owned?â
âWell, of course it would,â Mattie said nonchalantly. âYouâre the fairer sex, and a mortal besides.â
âOh, so Iâm a mortal now?â she flared, advancing towards him hotly. âAnd whatâs that supposed to mean? That Iâm just so inferior to you?â
He caught her around the waist and held her close to him, playfully kissing the tip of her nose. âHere, no,â he said, touching her head, indicating her mind. âBut here, yes.â He patted her bottom, and smirked playfully.
