Chapter 12

“Ah, the first full-blooded mortal in Otherworld for centuries,” Mattie said, twirling her across the room she’d been giving in a high tower of the castle. “They’d spoil you rotten, if I wasn’t here to prevent it.”

The elves had already brought her up several trays of too many delectable foods for her to ever eat all of in one day, as well as drawn her a bath, combed and braided her hair, and took her measurements to fit her for new dresses.

“Jealous, are you?” she teased him. “Where’s this cottage anyway? I do hope I find it to my satisfaction.”

“Ah, you do a good spoiled brat,” he complimented her snooty accent. “I’ll take you there later, after the doctor’s appointment.”

“Why do the Fae have doctors anyway, if they never get sick and heal on their own?” she inquired, pausing to admire herself in front of the full-length mirror over the door. The elves had coiled the many braids they’d given her into a fancy crown on the top of her head, as well as painted her lips and her eyelids and she couldn’t seem to stop admiring their handiwork.

“Ah, well, Dr. Barnaby isn’t really for the Fae people,” Mattie admitted, a bit sheepish.

She turned to face him over her shoulder, puzzled. “What do you mean?”

“Well, he’s an animal doctor.”

“You mean a veterinarian?” Lo demanded, becoming concerned.

“I mean he tends to horses, and the Fae pets, though he’s treated mortals before, though not for a very long time of course.”

Lo’s face contorted, perturbed. “Well, then he must be like 900 years old!”

“Maybe,” Mattie shrugged. “Fae don’t keep…”

“Yes, yes, Fae don’t keep track of age,” Lo finished for him. “Well, I don’t know if I like this very much, being treated by an animal doctor, as if I’m some – some pet!”

“Like it or not, it’s the king’s orders, and I’ll see that you abide by them,” Mattie said. “Though I’ve not convinced him yet to lift my sentence, but High Fae help me, I will soon, and then you’ll be mine really and truly, to attend to and keep in line.”

“What do you mean?” Lo said, her eyes narrowing.

“Why, it means a man is responsible for his bound, of course,” Mattie explained, puzzled that she wouldn’t already know. “Your crimes and misdoings would be seen as my own, and I’d be the one to answer for them. But of course, you’d be answering to me.”

He grinned at that, pleased. Lo frowned. “So you mean it would truly be like I was some pet to you? Some property that you owned?”

“Well, of course it would,” Mattie said nonchalantly. “You’re the fairer sex, and a mortal besides.”

“Oh, so I’m a mortal now?” she flared, advancing towards him hotly. “And what’s that supposed to mean? That I’m just so inferior to you?”

He caught her around the waist and held her close to him, playfully kissing the tip of her nose. “Here, no,” he said, touching her head, indicating her mind. “But here, yes.” He patted her bottom, and smirked playfully.
